Advanced OAT Mastery Course Starts
October 23rd, 2019!

The Organic Acids Test, from Great Plains Laboratory, should be a cornerstone assessment tool for anyone practicing functional and integrative medicine. Health care is in a crisis. The high cost of medicines, procedures and insurance premiums are forcing people to seek alternatives for their health problems. Also, the realization that conventional medicine (aka., traditional medicine) is limited in helping people with many chronic ailments has instigated a movement in self-care through internet resources and do-it-yourself treatments and/or to seek out practitioners trained in "other" of ways of administering health care. Fortunately, there are tools that you as a health care practitioner can easily implement to help more people achieve better health and wellness and get to the root causes of their chronic health concerns. The OAT is one such tool!

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) is the single greatest test that every health care practitioner should know how to interpret and use in their practice.

- Dr. Kurt Woeller, Medical Director, Integrative Medicine Academy

What is the Organic Acids Test (OAT)?

An OAT is an accurate assessment of what is going on metabolically in the body. It evaluates for over 75 urinary metabolites that can be useful for discovering underlying causes of health problems. Treatments based on OAT findings often leads to improved energy, sleep and mental health conditions, as well as reduced attention and concentration problems, chronic pain, digestive issues and neurological disorders. It is the single greatest test that every health care practitioner should know how to interpret and use in clinical practice. It is a powerful tool for helping people with chronic health problems and is a cornerstone test taught in the various Integrative Medicine Academy’s Mastery Courses.

What are Organic Acids (OA)?

Organic acids are chemical compounds excreted in the urine of mammals that are products of metabolism. They are substances in which carbon and hydrogen are always present, but may also contain the elements of oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. Examples of OA’s are lactic acid linked to glucose metabolism and can be elevated in metabolic problems, physical stress, poor blood flow, bacterial infections, mitochondrial dysfunction, mold toxicity and even sleep apnea. Another common OA is HPHPA produced by certain clostridia bacteria in the digestive system. HPHPA is a known inhibitor of nervous system dopamine metabolism which is linked to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, various mental health disorders and autism.

Who Is The OAT Beneficial For?

The Organic Acids Test is for any individual with a chronic health condition where you suspect metabolic toxins or imbalances may be a causative or contributing factor. The following is a short list of health disorder, but not exclusive:

  • Autism
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Autoimmune
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Digestive problems
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Mental health conditions
  • Neurological disorders

Who is The Advanced OAT Mastery Course Designed For?

Our Advanced OAT Mastery Course is designed for the health care practitioner who has some experience in Organic Acids Testing. The Advanced OAT Mastery is dedicated to mastering the GPL OAT, but information from this course can easily be applied to other laboratory OAT profiles.

This Course is Specifically Designed For:

• Practitioners who have personally used the OAT with patients and feel relatively comfortable with many of its markers.
• Practitioners who are familiar with OATs from other laboratory companies, but want to learn how to clinically apply the GPL OAT into practice in a much more detailed way.
• Practitioners who have taken Dr. Kurt Woeller’s one-day OAT seminar through GPL Academy sponsored by Great Plains Laboratory.
• Practitioners who are Alumni of at least one of the Mastery courses offered from Integrative Medicine Academy: Autism Mastery, Functional Mastery, SIBO Mastery, Toxicity Mastery.

Should You Take This Advanced OAT Mastery Course if You Are New to The OAT Profile ?

The short answer is "No." As a health care practitioner, you are certainly free to choose whatever educational material you have a desire to learn. This includes participating in the many Mastery courses that we provide. However, the Advanced OAT Mastery Course is designed to be the most comprehensive OAT training available. The information is extensive and challenging. It’s important that a member taking this course has some experience in using the OAT and understanding its various markers. For those new to the OAT we strongly recommend starting our Basic OAT Mastery Course (coming soon) or attending one of the GPL Academy OAT seminars.

Each section on the OAT can be viewed as its own separate lab test. Mastering the OAT takes time and dedication, but ultimately is practice transformative in helping patients challenged with chronic health problems.

Become An Integrative Medicine & OAT Specialist
With The Advanced OAT Mastery Course!

The OAT From Great Plains Laboratory is Separated Into
Multiple Major Categories And Subcategories.

With Advanced OAT Mastery Course, You Will Explore ALL of The OAT Sections, including:

  • YEAST AND FUNGAL MARKERS

Every marker explained, including links to invasive candida, aspergillus and fusarium mold exposure and other markers associated with yeast overgrowth.

  • BACTERIA MARKERS

Includes markers of normal bacterial activity, e.g. DHPPA, as well as dysbiosis that can be associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

  • CLOSTRIDIA BACTERIA MARKERS

Includes 4-hydroxyphenylacetic, HPHPA and 4-creol linked to the presence of pathogenic clostridia bacteria, including Clostridia difficile. Clostridia toxins can have profound negative effects on the digestive system, but also the brain and nervous system. It’s essential that every practitioner understand the relationship between clostridia toxins and various health disorders because many other OAT profiles do not provide comprehensive clostridia markers. The GPL OAT does!

  • OXALATE METABOLITES

Includes Oxalic which can be linked to oxalate crystals and kidney stones, as well as other pain associated disorders such as fibromyalgia, arthritis and vulvodynia. Oxalate problems can also lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and have a negative impact on mineral balance, and are known to interact with heavy metals such as mercury and lead.

  • MITOCHONDRIAL MARKERS

Includes various organic acids linked to mitochondrial dysfunction such as Succinic (strongly linked to environmental chemical exposure) and Lactic (can indicate the presence of mold toxins). This Advanced OAT Mastery course will explain in detail each OAT marker related to mitochondrial dysfunction and the various causes of mitochondrial problems that every functional and integrative medicine health practitioner needs to know.

  • NEUROTRANSMITTER MARKERS

Includes dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin metabolites, as well as the new OAT marker DOPAC. This section of the OAT is often revealing for people with mental health challenges, sleeping disorders and neurological conditions. For example, elevations in dopamine are often seen in individuals with clostridia toxins, e.g. HPHPA. High dopamine can lead to nervous system toxicity. The new DOPAC marker has clinical significance for mental and neurological health problems too and is associated with the methylation cycle.

  • NUTRITIONAL, FATTY ACID AND AMINO ACID METABOLITE MARKERS

These contain various organic acids related to nutritional imbalances such as lack of Vitamin C, B6 and B12, as well as fatty acid disorders which correlate to mitochondrial problems, etc. The amino acid metabolites can be linked to complex biochemical disorders. Each marker in these sections will be explored in detail and clinical correlations made to various health disorders.

  • INDICATORS OF DETOXIFICATION

Includes markers for glutathione status and/or methylation imbalances. This section of the OAT has strong associations with biochemical imbalances and environmental toxins. The Advanced OAT Mastery course will explore various relationships to other factors, e.g. chemicals, mycotoxins, heavy metals which can negatively influence detoxification.

  • LAB INTERPRETATIONS

Includes many examples of OATs highlighting different areas of imbalances. Each practitioner who completes the Advanced OAT Mastery course will be confident in OAT assessment and prepared to correlate other functional medicine testing for people dealing with chronic health challenges.

  • CORRELATION TO OTHER LAB TESTS

Includes information about how the OAT relates to other laboratory testing and which markers on the OAT should prompt investigation into other areas such as environmental toxin assessment, mold exposure, etc.

  • CASE REVIEWS

Includes patient case reviews for real-life clinical practice learning. Also, case examples will be provided that ask each course member to prioritize OAT categories and certain markers that have strong clinical significance within the context of multiple health complaints. The goal is to understand all of the OAT markers, but learn how to prioritize clinically which markers should take presidence over others.

  • TROUBLESHOOTING & CLINICAL PEARLS

Discussed throughout the Advanced OAT Mastery course are clinical pearls from a practicing clinician standpoint. The Advanced OAT Mastery course is not just about memorizing markers on a lab test, but how the OAT markers may relate to various patient scenarios. Troubleshooting information is always important in real-life clinical practice and learning how to apply the OAT to each person clinically is paramount to fully understanding the usefulness of this test.
